Although it’s a bit expensive, we here at DCist thought we should note that the Cirque Du Soleil production “Varekai” opened here in D.C. this weekend. The show runs Tuesday through Sunday until Oct. 24 on the grounds of R.F.K. stadium, and tickets range from $55 to $75, or – if you can afford it – $195 for VIP seating, reserved parking, and gourmet hors d’oeuvres.

The show, set “deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano” features lavishly choreographed dance, acrobatics, and theater. Here’s the inspiration for the plot, as explained by their website:

From the sky falls a solitary young man, and the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world populated by fantastical creatures, this young man sets off on an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered.

In a review in today’s Post, Peter Marks gives the production positive marks, conceding that although the Cirque productions have become somewhat formulaic, Varekai’s “artistic elements and athletic feats are accomplished at such an elite level that thoughts of past Cirque programs can be put aside. Rarely does routine seem so out of the ordinary.” All that, and it’s easily accessible by Metro – What could be better!
