The Carlsonics have earned quite a reputation around the District. In addition to being a tight, competent, exuberant and damn good rock and roll outfit, they put on one hell of a live show, or so DCist has heard. Well, the rumors are true. In the small, U-shaped upstairs hall at DC9 last night, the Carlsonics rocked like no band should rock on a Tuesday night.
Lead singer Aaron Carlson opened the show by announcing the band as hailing from Brooklyn. It was a little humor from the homegrown band that we locals protectively stake a claim to. Carlson and band mates Nikki West, John Passmore, Edward Donohue and Mike Scutari then eased into a joyous, uninhibited and unpretentious set that included everything from chaotic guitar solos to toy slide whistles.
The highlight of last night’s show was an unnamed track on which guitarist Nikki West took over lead vocals. A slow and haunting number West showcased some real vocal chops, howling like she was channeling Janis Joplin in one breath, but then quickly singing out a clear and aching melody.
