A few days ago, DCist wondered if there was a chance that WHFS “could get resurrected.” Today, we have what we think may be an answer to that question.

A tipster who works for a radio trade publication alerted DCist to an interesting development in the WHFS story. Apparently, rumors of the venerable alternative-rock favorite have been somewhat exaggerated.

This doesn’t mean that WHFS will be returning to the dial anytime soon, at least not in its full capacity, but those of you who have access to one of our finer internets will be able to continue listening to the station, which has been transformed into an AOL Radio Station. HFS fans are promised that the resurrected station will bring listeners “the freshest alt music” and “historic live performances.”

The always thorough Dave Hughes at DCRTV confirms the above announcement, and also adds that Baltimore station WXYV (105.7) will be integrating “WHFS tunes and personalities” into their evenings, nights and weekends.

It’s interesting, but not altogether surprising, that Infinity Broadcasting would hold on to the HFS franchise. While it may not have been a sustainable FM station in today’s media market, it is worth a great deal as a brand–especially when you consider the HFStival, a property the vultures were thought to be circling in the wake of the changeover at 99.1.

Has anyone tuned in online yet?
