Only one column in and DCist’s resident chef, Scott Reitz, is already departing from our quick, easy, and elegant motif. Trust us — the extra work for this one is definitely worth it.

For years, the inebriated youth of Adams Morgan have had but two simple choices to combat their drunken munchies. On one side of 18th Street sat Burrito Brothers, and on the other, a menagerie of pizza parlors touting their “Jumbo Slice“. While DCist certainly cannot argue the utility of drunken pizza consumption, we could hardly withhold our delight when the Amsterdam Falafel Shop opened for business a few months ago.

While it doesn’t fit the criteria of most drunken fare (it’s not greasy, meat and cheese products seem to be missing, heck it’s even healthy), we can’t deny that a properly dressed falafel in fresh pita is simply delicious. When offered the challenge, we simply had to discover how to make it at home. While slightly time consuming the results are well worth the work. This recipe is perfect for entertaining since the undressed sandwiches can be handed to your guests to garnish as they like. DCist recommends serving with a number of accompaniments, such as hummus, tzatziki (a yogurt sauce with mint and cucumber), freshly diced tomatoes, and shredded lettuce.
