Dan Rather leaves the anchor chair at CBS Evening News tonight after 24 years. His final broadcast is at 7 p.m. and while DCist hasn’t watched a network news broadcast in, say, years, we feel bad for the guy that’s apparently been brought down by bloggers. Will this DCist miss him? Um, probably not. Of all the high profile media anchors that have been jumping ship recently, we have to say it was Bob Edward’s departure from Morning Edition last year that hurt the most. Will anyone miss Rather? Judging by this overwrought and sentimental send off in today’s Post, Tom Shales won’t be able to go on without him:
Dan Rather is not going gentle into that good night. He’s not the type to go gentle, for one thing, and as far as he’s concerned, night hasn’t fallen by a long shot. And that’s part of our world, Wednesday, March 9, 2005.
Arise, Dan Rather, to gain thy dreams …
Dramatic, no? DCist predicts that Rather’s stock will rise once he’s back in the field, down in the trenches, reporting for a living once again. The man is old, but he really can work one of those camouflage vests.
Also, confidential note to Peter Jennings: Watch your back, we hear Terry Moran is gunning for your spot.
