Having had the opportunity to work with Wanda Alston several years ago, this DCist was among those who turned out for Saturday’s memorial at Luther Place Memorial Church, both to honor her life and mourn her violent and untimely death. Friends and members of the D.C.’s GLBT community were still entering the church when the service began with a drumming invocation, and eventually filled it so that only standing room was still available. It was a clear indication of how many lives Alston touched during her life and career in D.C. Among city officials in attendance, we spotted city councilmembers Jim Graham, David Catania and Adrian Fenty.
