The photo above shows the growing memorial to Sidney Drazin, the owner of the Comet Liquors in Adams Morgan. While the Post covered his death with a story last week, DCist was inspired by the candles, flowers and messages lining the store front on Saturday night to remember the Adams Morgan staple.

This DCist stopped by Comet nearly every weekday to purchase cigarettes. Sid would hand over a book of matches and then say, “you shouldn’t smoke.” It was nice little joke. Upon learning of Sid’s death, a friend who recently relocated to NYC, said, “leave a bagel outside the door for me.” Another friend mentioned how Sid kept a spare set of keys for her aunt, who lived nearby, just in case she ever locked herself out of her apartment. Other fans of Sid left notes taped to the glass store front of Comet. One note mentioned how he always meticulously scrapped off the price sticker from bottles of booze. Other notes thanked him for the memories.

DCist thinks that the most fitting tribute to the liquor store owner was the empty bottle of booze surrounded by the candles and flowers. Sid meant a lot to the Adams Morgan neighborhood and it’s nice to see the neighborhood pouring out for their homie. Do you have any memories of Sid and Comet?
