We ventured to DC9 early Sunday morning for the official Interpol after-party where bassist Carlos D was the guest celebrity DJ for the ElectroTease dance party/avant-guard spectacle. DC9’s upper level was packed and the crowd was energized and it was one of the better dance gatherings we’ve been to in a while. So kudos to ElectroTease, which was “founded by three rebellious uninhibited party girls, disenchanted with the uptight conservative mindset of Washingtonians and the stale lackluster nightlife of our nation’s capital,” according to its bio.

If we hadn’t been so frustrated with the staff of Rumba Cafe in Adams Morgan for being less-than-accommodating earlier in the evening (requiring a two-tapas minimum for everyone in our party when we just wanted drinks), we would have been dancing too. So we were content with a side table, an Abita Turbodog and taking in everything, including the movie playing in the background.

But it wasn’t just any movie, but “Metropolis,” Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece. If Carlos chose “Metropolis” to be the movie background for the dance extravaganza, then he is not only a master of the audio, but the visual as well.

The timing of some of the tracks with scenes from the film was so on, so much so we wonder it everything was by Carlos’ design versus pure coincidence. Perhaps it was all by chance. We hope it was intentional.
