With the Wizards at fourth place in their
division conference and the Nats starting what will, most likely, be a disappointing season, area sports champs are few and far between. But there’s at least one former local who as of last night can describe himself as a “World Champion.” Last night at Wrestlemania XXI, former D.C. area bouncer Dave Batista defeated Triple H to win wrestling’s World Heavyweight Championship.
The 36-year-old Batista has been wrestling professionally since 1999, making his WWE debut in 2002. He quickly went from being a sidekick to winning the WWE Tag Team title in 2003 with wrestling legend Ric Flair as his partner. His title win last night makes him the champion of the WWE’s Raw brand, while wrestler/”rapper” John Cena defeated John Bradshaw Layfield to win the WWE Championship, the top title of the Smackdown brand. The WWE has yet to announce Batista’s next opponent, though “Money in the Bank” ladder match victor Edge has the right to challenge him at any time in the next year.
