Our post on a noise controversy in Glover Park yesterday mentioned that neighborhood’s newly created e-mail listserv on Yahoo Groups. That post got us thinking about neighborhood e-mail groups, and exactly how many there were around the city. These e-mail lists are generally open to the public and whether moderated or unmoderated serve as community forums for discussing neighborhood topics. The Columbia Heights list has even been such a hotbed of discussion it sparked a City Paper article earlier this year where the electronic gripes of some of the neighborhood’s newer residents was highlighted. The Columbia Heights group has nearly 1,000 members and dates back to 1999.

Neighborhood listservs have been the launching pads for countless neighborhood organizations and initiatives, allowed city officials to communicate quickly with constituents, and been an important forum for public discussion. Cleveland Park’s, has a whopping 2,820 members and was created in November 1999. Coming in second is Adams Morgan’s, which has more than 1,500 members. U Street News has just over 800 members, and Logan Circle’s was created in 2003 and has 244 members. Other lists include Northside DC, East of the River, and the Petworth neighborhood has no less than eight neighborhood-oriented groups.

Although it’s not a neighborhood list, DCWatch’s themail cannot escape notice as one of the city’s most widely read civic e-mail lists. A recent newsletter contained a submission pointing out many neighborhoods now have blogs, which “accomplish on a very local level what you do citywide.” The contributor points out In Shaw, Frozen Tropics (about Trinidad and adjacent neighborhoods), and Petworth News. We also list on our blogroll Columbia Heights DC.

Are you a member of your neighborhood’s listserv or know about an up-and-coming neighborhood blog? Which ones are we missing? Are you on a list outside of D.C. proper? Drop us a comment below.
