A few local blogs have recently pointed us toward what we think is the greatest idea for parents since the Diaper Genie was invented: Rock-N-Romp, a family-friendly series of concerts in Silver Spring backyard featuring fantastic local bands. The season runs May through October, one Saturday afternoon a month. Shows are free for the little tykes, a mere $4 donation is requested for adults, and you can view the schedule here. E-mail the enterprising Debbie for more information.
Rock-N-Romp isn’t the only option for parents who want to retain some sort of vestige of indie-cool while not bringing their two-year olds into a smoke-filled bar. Pancake Mountain is an offbeat local cable show (showed on DCTV) that often hosts indie concerts for kids. Arcade Fire, Fiery Furnaces, Ian MacKaye and Bob Mould have all participated; click here to join their email list for alerts about upcoming shows and tapings.
Additionally, Columbia Heights bar Wonderland hosts a “Baby Happy Hour” every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m., where you can bring your child to the smoke-free second level and socialize. And Fort Reno will be starting up this Thursday (the first show features The Rude Staircase, Gist, and Sentai); it’s an open, outdoor concert environment that’s laid-back and relaxed.
We’re child-free, but some of these local events have us considering borrowing a toddler or two for the day just so we can tag along. D.C. area parents: do you have any other tips on how to enjoy concerts or a night out with your kids?
