The Nats might have lost their home winning streak on Sunday (to say nothing of Nick Johnson) but last night they got their groove back, winning by a characteristic single run, 2-1. Likewise, recent addition Ryan Drese pitched 8 solid innings to rebound from an 11-4 loss to the Pirates just last week. It was a big night for Chad “Chief” Cordero as well, who got the save. Wil Cordero drove in his first run of the season — a sacrifice fly sending Vinny Castilla home in the fourth, in what would be the final run of the night. Humble beyond his salary, Cordero told the Post: “It always feels good to contribute.”
The Nationals will get ready to do it all over again at RFK tonight. You might want to hold your breath through righty rookie John Patterson’s first inning, though — so far this season, batters are .347 against him before the Nats get their first 3 outs, but only .216 against him afterward. He also allowed 4 runs last week in Pittsburgh, so maybe you’ll just want to hold your breath for the rest of the game, too.
