Good news for D.C. residents who are desperate to get in on the whole reality TV experience, but are, how shall we say, perhaps not telegenic enough to be actually cast in one.
You can sign up now for something called Urban Dare, billed as a mashup of photo hunt, trivia & dare-filled race through the city. All you need is a team of two, a digital camera, and a working knowledge of D.C.’s public transportation system. Then send in your application form, and show up on Sept. 10 to compete for a chance to win $100,000.
Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. The only thing we’re wary of is that the registration fee is $130 (for two people, but still) and there is no guarantee that anyone will win the prize money — the top 5 teams get a shot at guessing a three-digit code that will open a “talking safe” which contains the money.
We’re also not quite sure who’s behind it, as there are no TV sponsors as of yet for either of the Dares, the D.C. event or the Boston version a month later. An e-mail to the organizer went unanswered today. But we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
UPDATE: A conversation with Kevin Keefe, the event’s founder, Wednesday morning reveals that one of our commenters is right: Kevin plopped down $1500 for prize insurance on the basis that the odds of winning $100,000 are 1 in 200. So if someone wins, they will be paid by the insurance company. But the event is clearly in its fledgling stages — Kevin said at this point he is just trying to get sponsorship for next year. Bottom line: Right now, this looks like something for serious race and game fans only. We’ll just have to wait and see if it pans out.
