Ok, so it is a little like throwing yourself a party (which, in fact, we are doing next week), but we think it’s worthy to note that today is the day DCist celebrates its first birthday. It was one year ago today that DCist launched, becoming the fifth of what is now the 13-member -ist family, including troublesome siblings Austin, Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Shanghai, Seattle, and Toronto.
In that time, we have pumped out some 2613 posts, provoked 9765 comments and counting, and run 34 budding bloggers and writers ragged, some of whom have since moved on to bigger and better things. We have focused on the arts, on local bands, on the many restaurants and bars the District has to offer, on local politics, on sports, and on style; we have taken road trips, attended concerts big and small, and hosted happy hours and concerts. And, of course, we single-handedly launched the 15 minutes of fame for the man we all know simply as Borf and managed to name the District newest panda, the always-lovable “Butterstick.” All told, it’s been a good year.
The coming year has much more to offer. Expect more stories, more snarkiness, and new writers and features being added to the fold. Like the growing empire that the -ist sites are, we expect to have cornered the blog market by early 2006, at which point we will ruthlessly lord over all contributors and content. Resistance is, in the end, futile.
We hope you’ll all join us for bloggers and booze and DCist’s birthday party next Thursday night at Stetson’s.
Happy Birthday, ummmm, us!
