Now that DCist has a year’s worth of material to work with, we can finally start rooting through our dusty archives to find out exactly what was happening on this very day, one year ago. Ok, so it’s not exactly what the New York Times has to offer (which includes stories of historical importance, alongside cool black and white pics of the world of yester-decade), but it’s something. Starting today, DCist will feature a daily post in which we take a gander back to the simpler times of, errr, last year, and see what was occupying our time and attention.

>>This time last year we were still basking in the return-of-baseball glory. We did, though, ominously predict the battle that was to come:
Don’t forget, this isn’t a done deal … a stadium has to be built. And its future lies in city council chambers. >>We reported on urban heat islands in the District.
>>We wrote about Martha Stewart. No, not the smiley, “I’ve served my time” Martha Stewart. This was Martha a week short of her five-month visit to Alderson, West Virginia. We almost felt sorry for her.
>>We reviewed Stephen Patrick Morrisey’s show at DAR Constitution Hall.
>>We tried to be good Samaritans, only to be stymied by an un-responsive police hotline and an answering machine.
>>We prepped for the first of three presidential debates.
>>We reported on a rogue, bed-invading squirrel.
>>We remembered the better days when Metro Transit Police would arrest pregnant women for talking loudly on cell phones.
