It may be a worn out slogan by now, but reading really is fundamental. This Saturday, the UDC State Education Agency will sponsor their Fifth Annual 3K Walk for Literacy to raise funds for and awareness of adult literacy needs in the city.

According to the agency’s website, more than 35 percent of District adults have low literacy skills, which is a significant barrier when it comes to employing residents in positions that pay more than minimum wage. The UDC State Education Agency serves just about anyone over 16 who needs a little help — everyone from homeless adults in need of basic writing skills to adults in ESL programs that need computer skills.

Money raised from the Walk for Literacy event will be distributed to literacy programs throughout the District. Last year, event organizers reported that they raised $25,000, 100 percent of which went “directly to programs that support adult learners.”

DCist definitely thinks it’s worth the early wake up — the event starts at 8 a.m. For registration information, call 1-866-832-2289, or just show up. On site registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and costs $10 for students and seniors, and $25 per individual. Walkers should meet at the horribly named TechWorld Plaza (8th and K Streets, NW).

Will you be there?
