Call us suckers, call us gullible.

Whatever you call us, this much is true — according to the Federal Trade Commission, the District is more prone to consumer fraud than many other metropolitan areas, writes WJLA. And it’s not because we don’t have plenty of laws on the book to prevent such fraud — we seem to have more than most cities, in fact — it’s that the District government hasn’t provided the funds necessary to enforce them in over a decade.

Council-member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) has pushed for that to change, recently directing $1 million towards enforcement for this year. The Office of Consumer Protection will now be staffed by eight city employees, focusing primarily on home improvement and car repair.

In related news, DCist has just come across $100 million from some dead American guy in Nigeria. We totally forgot to sign some of the paperwork, though, and we need someone to lend us their John Hancock and bank account to store the money. For that trouble, they’ll get 10 percent of our riches. If anyone wants in on this totally legitimate deal, please let us know.
