DCist Editor Emeritus Mike Grass draws our attention to the following blurb on page 40 of today’s Express:

It comes across as a little meta: a feature on rail riding to be included in a tabloid read by rail riders, who are presumably trying to block out the ups and downs of Metro commuting that will surely populate the dispatches. Nonetheless, we like the idea and look forward to reading the tales of life on the trains and platforms of Metro. Lord knows we’ve witnessed some weird shit down there.

Post Not So Interested in New Writers: Mama WaPo is looking to reduce its editorial staff, says an article today in Editor and Publisher. Around 80 newsroom jobs will be eliminated (out of a staff of over 800), although layoffs will not be the tool of choice. The Post will use attrition and buyouts to reduce staff, and it looks like some reportorial travel will be curtailed, as well. E&P notes that the high cost of covering the Iraq war contributed to cost pressures at the paper, a problem that hasn’t affected the New York Times, which just had Judy Miller make stuff up.
