Our email list is blowing up this morning with tips to check out this piece in today’s New York Times, a feature taking a look at the once again bustling U Street drag. The Times claims it can hear hipsters sneering in the opening paragraph, and a few of our favorite locales are omitted, but they avoid calling the area the U District, Hipster Handbook style, and overall it’s a pretty neat little read.
NYT writer Alicia Ault gives the due nod to history, pointing out the rich heritage of the street as a center of African-American culture and jazz music, and then she goes on to focus on the shops, condos, and nightlife options growing like kudzu east from 16th Street. Busboys and Poets gets plenty of face time as does Creme, but somehow both Cakelove and St. Ex managed to avoid mention (as did the Bush girls, thank goodness). Ben’s Chili Bowl gets a mention, as does the Bohemian Caverns, but the Times has none for “Little Ethiopia.”
Sins of omission or no, we appreciate the attention paid to U Street up the in Apple, even if it’s now so established as to be nearly old hat. Give the piece a read, and let us know what you think they covered well and what they missed.
