We don’t like it or do it.

Okay, maybe another word. Over the past weekend we received a few complaints about comments being censored. A couple of readers had seen a performance or formed an opinion that made them think we were big dummies and/or jerks, and decided to leave comments on old posts to that effect. When the comments didn’t show, they left a few elsewhere alleging that their words had been unjustly silenced.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but we have to plead ignorance. We don’t censor critical comments — but Movable Type occasionally does. In their quest to eliminate comment spam, the folks at Gothamist are constantly fiddling with our anti-spam settings. One consequence of that is that comments on old posts are more likely to be marked as spam and cast into the void than newer ones. That’s what happened in the aforementioned cases.

So consider yourself warned. Our intentional comment deletions are limited to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and wishes for physical harm upon our writers. If you don’t fall into either of those categories but have found your words mysteriously missing, please email one of us.
