It’s been eight months since their last home series win, but the Nationals finally captured two out of three at RFK from their opponent as they downed the Pirates yesterday afternoon.
For the Nationals, these games were as much much-win games as any team 10 games under .500 ever plays. Coming off a disastrous two-game home sweep at the hands of the lowly Florida Marlins, the Nats faced the Pittsburgh Pirates, off to their worst start in over 40 years. On Friday, Zach Day and Nick Johnson provided the highlights. Johnson homered twice and Day pitched seven scoreless innings as the Nats blanked the Pirates 6-0.
On Saturday, things turned sour. By the second inning, the Nats had banged out an early 4-1 lead. But Ramon Ortiz couldn’t make the cushion last, and the Nats managed just five singles until the Pirates won on an 11th-inning home run.
