Another Sunday, another Opinionist. DCist is always willing to hear your thoughts/rants on life in the city and its environs. Email us. Today D.C. resident and driver Alex Lundry has some choice words on jaywalking.
Being in a city that lives and dies over serious debates of national significance, I never imagined that jaywalking would be the thing to break me. Yet every day, I find myself grumbling, mumbling, and cursing about jaywalking to anyone that will listen.
On nearly every street, in every quadrant of the city, at any given time, there seems to be somebody crossing the street illegally. I wish that it were the relatively innocent act of crossing a deserted street at a desolate hour of the night in order to cut short a long walk home. Sadly, its not – hence the number of vehicular homicides I’ve flirted with.
Instead, come down to H Street during rush hour and see the complete circus that it is: witness the men and women who cross the street with absolutely no regard for the cars passing by! The sense of complete contempt they have for you when you actually won’t pause for them to pass by! The incomprehensible serenity of their face as they straddle the yellow line with cars whizzing by on both sides, waiting for a lull so they can cross! The crass selfishness of the held-up hand they presume to be powerful enough to stop your car!
