Post Heeds Advice of Mid-Nineties Band
We’ve talked about this before, as have others, but a tipster told us that the Post will shelve plans to meld its Health, Food, and Home section into one, and will instead decide to keep ’em separated. We first heard of the plan to combine the three, relatively anemic sections last November, but couldn’t pin anything down on what was actually happening. Now we sort-of know (for the next week or so, until it changes again).

We do know the Post offered early retirement to many of its writers, photographers, and editors, and that about 70 of them took the offer, thus reducing the writing and production resources at the newspaper. There have been fewer articles in the Food section lately, and those that are there are of markedly reduced quality than what we’ve read in years past. Frankly, we’re a little worried that this will continue with the decision to retain three separate sections.

We’ve heard that WaPo made the decision based on feedback from focus groups, but we wonder if there are other reasons for rejecting the change. Far be it from us to speculate; we’ll leave that to you in the comments.

Flying Scotsman Replacement On Its Way In
Earlier this year the Flying Scotsman was forcibly evicted from its location in a public spectacle that involved sidewalk piles of tartan-covered barstools. Despite having lain fallow during planting season, the 233 2nd St. NW space will have a bountiful harvest come this autumn. A new sports bar, Hamilton’s Bar & Grille, will open there in September, just in time for whatever sports season happens in September. We’re happy for another option in this neighborhood, especially since My Brother’s Place beer tastes like its lines haven’t been cleaned in years, and the place smells a little like vomit.
