There’s more to this weekend than axe-wielding haunted house props and bars full of Sexy Nurses sexily vomiting from too many Jäger bombs. Those of you who feel pained at the thought of breaking out the zombie costume again have a wealth of options to satiate your creative side without resorting to make-up that’ll make you break out like a 15 year-old for the next month. Now that I’ve completely earned the ire of half my fellow, but inexplicibly pro-Halloween DCist staffers, let’s get to the agenda. Jeans and t-shirts encouraged at all events.

Thursday:

>>Is sculpture dead? No, probably not, but it’s always good to check. The Hirshhorn puts its thumb on the pulse of this particular medium tonight at 7 p.m. with In Conversation: The Current State of Sculpture. Artists, curators, and art historians will discuss how the contemporary versions of this art form have benefitted from or survived it’s past. The talk kicks off the new sculpture exhibit The Uncertainty of Objects and Ideas, so swing by after and see if these guys know what they’re talking about.

>>Think about stopping by the increasingly artsy Shaw neighborhood tonight to check out the reception for two solo shows at the Long View Gallery, which opened its doors just a few months ago. From 5 to 8 p.m., see Sandra Warren Gobar’s softly rendered, mixed media landscapes. Tricia Bishop’s curvy, sensual sculptures are the perfect compliments to Gobar’s romantic paintings.
