Known for having good prices, a great selection, and and a terrible location, Georgetown’s Dixie Liquor was for decades a supplier of kegs to Georgetown students and young District residents alike. This week, though, it closes its doors, taking its kegs and surly employees with it.

I found out the way no keg-seeker should — I showed up on Saturday afternoon money in hand, only to be informed that due to their impending closure, no kegs were available (though they were running a “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” deal on liquor). Upon asking for a reason, I was informed that the owner was apparently sick of fines and other interference from the D.C. government, including a recent spat that saw the store shuttered for a week and fined a hefty sum. According to a Post article from late 2005, the store was fined $7,000 for selling kegs without proper registration, including 1,235 kegs without invoices. Maybe they got caught again. According to the article in Georgetown’s The Hoya, the owner’s not saying.

Either way, the few remaining keg sellers in the District probably aren’t shedding any tears over Dixie’s demise. But as we bid farewell, we’ll take one last sip of the Busch Light they so consistently provided at affordable prices.
