Well, it wasn’t a snow day, but the federal government and all the employers that follow its schedule had a two hour delay this morning. Local roads in the city that were icy at 8:30 were slushy by 10, though many had yet to be plowed or even salted and sanded.
Metro cleared tracks throughout the night with deicing equipment, and extended their morning rush hour service to 11 a.m. to accommodate the federal schedule. Aside from a snafu near Dupont Circle around 8:15, no major delays were reported on the rail lines.
Metrobuses did not fare as well, and have been running mainly on snow emergency routes. Even so, Metro reported that 60 individual buses got stuck in the snow this morning on unplowed roads. As the city plows side streets throughout the day, buses will return to non-emergency routes.
That, at least, was the official story, officially spun. However, as we Washingtonians are well aware, ground truth can be far different. Yesterday, for example, Metro announced that it began running a rush hour schedule at 1 p.m. As your comments revealed, many people were not convinced. So how did Metro fare this morning? Were things as smooth and incident-free as suggested? Or was the morning commute a big, soggy, mess?
