The fire that gutted Eastern Market this week left the historic Capitol Hill marketplace facing an estimated $20 to $30 million in repairs. Undaunted, this Sunday vendors will set up shop for the weekly flea market, and the streets surrounding the building will play host to the 44th annual Market Day festival.
The free, kid-friendly festival, which is organized by the community service group Friendship House, will feature arts and crafts, music, food, and games. Activities will begin at 11 a.m., and several streets adjacent to the Eastern Market building will be closed to traffic. The usual Sunday flea market vendors will be selling their produce, paintings, and eclectic mix of wares from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Market is located at the corner of 7th Street and North Carolina Avenue SE.
Donations to help rebuild Eastern Market will be accepted on Sunday, but you can also donate online. The Captiol Hill Community Foundation tells DCist that they’ve raised $120,000 so far. In addition they’ll soon be selling t-shirts to support the effort. Don’t forget that on Tuesday, May 8, you can also help in the rebuilding effort while getting a cup of joe or a pint of brew.
