The D.C. council is set to vote on legislation proposed by Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) tomorrow that would create exemptions to allow strip clubs displaced by the new Nationals stadium to relocate to Ivy City in Ward 5. As we told you previously, Ward 5 Council member Harry Thomas opposes the legislation and has offered several amendments to the bill, including one that was adopted that would give $3.6 million to improve the major corridors that surround Ivy City.
Concerned that concentrating the clubs in one small area could cause problems for residents, Thomas also wants a provision that would require a 1,200-foot buffer zone between each club, instead of the current 600-foot zone required between nude-dancing establishments. Graham’s bill would actually exempt the clubs from the 600-foot minimum distance.
Clearly, Thomas understands that this bill isn’t likely to be defeated on the merits, so he’s doing what he can minimize the legislation’s potential impact on Ivy City residents. Now Thomas has called a town hall meeting for 7 p.m. tonight at the Luke C. Moore Academy High School on Monroe Street, Northeast. Residents are invited to attend and give feedback to council members before they vote tomorrow.
