This weekend is the 45th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence from Great Britain. To commemorate this event, the Embassy of Jamaica will be hosting a series of events capped off with the Independence Sunday Market on Sunday at the Organization of American States on the corner of Constitution Ave. and 17th St. NW. Not only will there be food and crafts, but also a concert headlined by reggae artist Shaggy.
Shaggy gained a great deal of notoriety in the mid-1990s with the title track to his album Boombastic. In 2000, the album Hot Shot produced two big hits: “Angel” and “It Wasn’t Me”. After Hot Shot’s multi-platinum success, Shaggy has kept busy releasing records in Jamaica and the United Kingdom.
In addition to Shaggy, other performers will include John Holt, Bob Andy, Oscar B, Bare Essentials, Image Band, DJ Sprang, and Jamaican Jerry D as MC. Admission is free.
Independence Sunday Market begins at 1 p.m. and admission is free of charge.
