And a Mercedes.

Three years, one EP, one DCist interview, and a slew of locally hyped shows later and The Alphabetical Order have finally taken that next big step. October 9th marked the release of their debut full length album. I Am Magically Happening! is their most polished and complete work to date. It is the band’s signature early 90’s alt-rock sound with just enough mainstream pop glaze to raise them up from the underground.

The Alphabetical Order has become a staple in D.C.’s live music scene, and the album captures the essence of their live performances. There also seems to be a lot of experimenting in the sound throughout the record. “Constant State” recalls the style of a young Anthony Kiedis, alternating melody with rap rock. Hand claps and cowbells are introduced early on in “Dress Up/Dress Down” and this percussive hook makes way for “Submarine,” one of the most radio-friendly tracks of the album. The final track, “Gestalt,” comes in close second with an extremely catchy riff midway through the song. But it is not in these few moments of pop clarity that the band will make a name for themselves.

Regardless of the title’s intentions, “Foundation” really is their strong base. It is what the rest of the album strives towards but never quite reaches anywhere else. The song builds slowly piece by piece highlighting all of their parts, and is where Gavin Dunaway’s (and Kate Rears Burgman’s) vocals shine brightest.

The Alphabetical Order will be at the Black Cat backstage for a CD release party with Red Racer this Sunday, October 14th, 9 p.m., $5. You can listen to the full album for free on their website.
