A recent spate of armed robberies and muggings in Adams Morgan prompted Jonathon and Laura Lunardi to launch a new community website. AdamsMorganCrime.org aims to connect residents to discuss and solve crime issues in the neighborhood. Residents are invited to register on the site and share their stories in the forum, namely details on where and when crime happens in the neighborhood. The site is just getting off the ground, so it’s difficult to tell yet how effective it could actually be. A monthly email newsletter is also in the works.
WJLA first reported on two muggings that took place on Friday night. The first took place around 9 p.m. when a couple walked by Ontario and Kalorama roads and were held at gunpoint by four people with hoods over their faces. The foursome demanded the couples’ valuables, who in turn gave them everything they had.
The second incident, about an hour later, occurred at the corner of Summit Place and 18th Street, a few blocks away from the incident at Ontario and Kalorama. A woman was also robbed at gunpoint, despite walking with a group of five other friends — 2 male, 3 female.
According to a note tacked onto a condo building at Lanier Place, a woman was mugged last Wednesday night just outside its door.
A spokesperson for the MPD confirmed with WJLA that there is a rise in crime in Adams Morgan, but also notes that there is a spike in armed robberies during this time of year.
