Good morning, Washington. Just when you were starting to feel like the D.C. government was in a class by itself in terms of corruption, the federal government steps in to save the day. Federal prosecutors in Maryland have come to a plea agreement with a former official with the General Services Administration who has admitted accepting bribes from a firm seeking government contracts to provide security at federal buildings in Maryland and California. Dessie Nelson of Oakland, Calif. received a shopping bag filled with $35,000 in cash, an envelope stuffed with $10,000 in cash and a $7,000 Caribbean cruise from Holiday International Security founder Michael Holiday, a Silver Spring resident and former Montgomery County police officer. Well done, Dessie! The amount of money you took in no way compares to the amount of money illegally funneled out of our Office of Tax and Revenue, but the intent to direct government contracts to specific companies and the fact that you received your bribe in a shopping bag mean you rival our own corrupt officials in classiness.
More on the Murdered Sisters: The murders of four children, sisters between the ages of five and 18, in a Southwesteast home earlier this week has since been splashed all over every cable news channel in the country. Today the Examiner is running three separate stories about the crime, for which the girls’ mother, Banita Jacks, has been charged with first-degree murder. But the Washington Post has the real headline-grabbing scoop of the day: Jacks reportedly told police that her daughters were “possessed by demons” and that they had been dead for at least four months before U.S. marshals found their bodies. Despite this, Jacks has denied killing the children and said they died in their sleep. Prosecutors are saying the evidence shows otherwise.
That’s One Smart Bank Robber: The Post is reporting that a man impersonating an armored car guard walked out of the Wachovia bank branch at 801 Pennsylvania Ave. NW with more than $100,000 yesterday morning, and it apparently took bank officials hours to realize that they’d been robbed. WJLA puts the figure stolen by the man, who was dressed in a Brinks uniform, as high as $370,000. Both the FBI and MPD are investigating.

This Day in DCist: In 2007 we wondered if Stadium Mania wasn’t taking over the city, and in 2005 we congratulated Street Sense on all their success.
