This business with the Yeasayer concert tomorrow night at Black Cat has gotten a little ridiculous. For those of you who haven’t been following it, Yeasayer, an up-and-coming band from New York, scheduled a concert with MGMT for the Black Cat’s backstage on Wednesday night, and while you can usually only get tickets to shows in the small room at the door, the venue sold advance tickets to this one and it sold out quickly.

UPDATE: Maegan over at Black Cat called us to clarify that tickets for shows in the Backstage, with the exception of dance nights, have all been available for purchase online for at least the last ten months. Who knew?

That’s when the whining began. Several people sent us emails over the weekend asking if the Black Cat couldn’t be convinced to move the show to the main stage, as no one was currently scheduled upstairs that night. BrightestYoungThings apparently had the same experience and did the heavy lifting on the story, only to discover that Black Cat had actually offered the band the upstairs, but they declined, fearing they wouldn’t be able to attract enough people to cover the cost of operating the big room. So a facebook group quickly popped up to try to petition the band to reconsider. A handful of music blogs then encouraged people to sign up to show Yeasayer there was enough interest in the show to justify the move. Which of course meant we got some more emails pointing out all those links to us and begging us to get involved in the cause.

Well rabid Yeasayer fans, we have some bad news and some good news. The bad news is that we just got off the phone with Yeasayer’s publicist, Mark Willett, and he tells us the band is definitely not going to move tomorrow night’s show upstairs. He said it was too late in the game to try to make the switch, and they really couldn’t do much about it at this point. The good news? Willett also said that Yeasayer will very soon announce another date in D.C., at a yet unannounced venue that will definitely be bigger than Black Cat’s backstage, which will very likely be in March. Stay tuned to the Yeasayer web site for the announcement.
