In early December we wrote about the Dallas Museum of Art’s Dorothy Kosinski taking over as Director of the Phillips Collection this spring. Over at Modern Art Notes, Tyler Green sat down with Kosinski for a short interview (parts one and two) about the direction she intends to take the museum and how it will find its niche in the Washington D.C. art world.

Art Parties:

Who needs plain ol’ opening receptions? This week a number of venues are having full scale parties with all the art, music, and socializing you could ask for.

>> First check out Art Whino between 6 p.m. and midnight on Friday, with D.C. painter J. Coleman’s new exhibition, A Dream Remembered, An Endless Pause (image pictured). See him work his magic when he does a live painting performance at 9 p.m. Providing your soundtracks for the evening will be DJ Mikel Panda in the front gallery from 6 to 9 p.m., and hard rock/grunge band Object, who will play in the back gallery after 9 p.m.

>> Catch a reprise of sorts on Tuesday at the Black Cat backstage where J. Coleman and graffiti artist Kelly Towles will be performing some more live painting with, yes, the band Object performing on stage. $8. 9 p.m.

>> If you haven’t checked out the monthly X and Pulse art parties at BeBar you’re missing out on some fantastic underground talents. X runs 6 to 10 p.m., 18 and over, and costs $8, or $5 if you incorporate this months’ theme “Revolution” into your look. There will be live music, projections, bellydancing performances, assembly line portraits by 4Traits and a live design competition with talents assembled by Project 4’s Anne Surak. Afterwards, the Pulse tehcno dance party runs 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.
