Good morning, Washington. Traffic stinks throughout much of the city today; a second major fire began overnight, this time at J.P.’s Night Club, a strip club on Wisconsin Ave. NW. The only person inside the club when the fire broke out after 3 a.m. escaped without injury, but part of Wisconsin Ave. is closed at Calvert. Yesterday’s fire in Northeast also continues to cause problems for firefighters and tie up traffic, and as we reminded you at the end of the day yesterday, a number of other street closures should be noted downtown and around Capitol Hill thanks to the annual ‘March for Life’.
Rhee to Introduce Gifted and Talented Education: Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee is planning to add a gifted and talented program to the city’s education system. Rhee has expressed outrage that D.C. Schools have not offered such programs for years, and said she plans to put them in place first in wards 5, 7 and 8, areas she said have the “biggest gap between how students are doing and how they should be doing.”
Outdoor Roll Calls Begin in Shaw: The Examiner went down to check out one of the new outdoor police roll calls in Shaw that are part of a new crime prevention strategy being implemented by Chief Lanier in the neighborhood. Police are touting the recovery of a handgun that resulted from increased foot patrols in the area north of the Washington Convention Center, which has been the scene of increasing gang violence recently.
