Thanks to flipperman75 here, I’ve been obsessing about these freaky frogs all week. Since we need a little fun on this gloomy Friday, his photo of this awesome Waxy Monkey Frog (or possibly a universe-dominating alien creature here to doom us all), a type without webbing so they can grasp tree branches, seemed just right. After flipping through his photostream of colorful and weird horned and poison dart frogs, I dragged a friend to go see them at the National Geographic Museum’s Explorers Hall at lunchtime a few days ago, and they’re even more colorful and fun to see in person (bring your camera!).
The Frogs! A Chorus of Colors exhibit opened January 25 and runs until May 11 and has about 20 different types of frogs on display from all over the world, as well as some strange side-exhibits like a Kermit puppet stuffed in glass and a detailed explanation of how native tribes constructed giant dart blowers with frog poison. Convienently located at 17th and M Streets NW for those of us working in the Dupont/Farragut areas, the exhibit is easily a lunchtime worth of entertainment. Explorers Hall is free and open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. EXIF.
