
MUSIC: Toronto-based The Cliks are touring off their soon-to-be-released album, Snakehouse. Often compared to the Pretenders, the band, known for their energetic live performances, has also written their own rock-remix take on Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River”. They’re at DC9 with Michelle Burleson and Mara Levi. $10, 8:30 p.m.
HAPPY HOUR: The Alliance Française hosts an early Valentine’s celebration tonight. Called Soirée Carte Blanche – Colors of Love, visitors are asked to dress up in their own interpretation of ‘the color of love’, bring iPod playlists to enter in a DJ contest, and enjoy “sexy drinks” – all for an $8 cover ($6 for members). MUSIC: Famous avant-garde/classical group Kronos Quartet is giving a free performance tonight at the University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center as part of their continuing residency there. This more informal concert will find the quartet sharing informal readings of works composed by UM School of Music students. 7:30 7 p.m.
READING: American University’s Department of Literature is hosting a reading with Mary Gaitskill, author of the novel Veronica: A Novel, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and was named one of the 10 best books of 2005 by the New York Times. The event will be held at American University’s Butler Pavilion, Butler Board Room. 8 p.m., Free.
MOVIE: Charles Burnett’s highly acclaimed 1977 film about the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, Killer of Sheep, has benefited from a recent renaissance, having been giving a rare (and brief) theatrical release last summer. If you missed it then, the AFI Silver Theater is giving you one last shot at it tonight at 6:30 p.m. Montgomery College students can take advantage of a special $5 ticket price to this screening as well.
