Yesterday the Washington Capitals announced that they have signed Tomas Fleischmann to a two-year contract at just under $750,000 per season. The Capitals now have long term contracts with every member of their top two offensive lines, both as they stand now and including injured leaders Michael Nylander and Chris Clark.

Fleischmann signed a contract for this season at the very end of training camp, making the team in part because of an injury to prospect Eric Fehr. Since then his play has gradually improved as he has worked hard to master the NHL game.

The AHL’s leading playoff scorer for both 2006 and 2007 is a good bet to stick around for a long time. The Capitals traded Robert Lang to Detroit for Fleischmann and draft picks, and Fleischmann has consistently shown the potential to live up to that billing. Currently complimenting Alexander Semin on the Capitals’ second line, Fleischmann has the potential to regularly put up two to three times the twenty-one points he has scored this season.
