Good morning, Washington. It may seem like last night’s storm didn’t amount to much, but according to the National Weather Service, the freezing rain we’re getting this morning means we should still expect a “significant” accumulation of ice through the course of the day. A winter storm warning is still in effect until 10 p.m. tonight. The U.S. Park Police closed a number of roads in Rock Creek overnight. We’ll have more of an update on weather and road conditions later on.
Meet the New Metro Transit Police Chief: Metro announced yesterday that they’ve hired Michael Taborn, the transit security chief of the Federal Transit Administration, to be the new Metro Transit Police Chief. Taborn has been in his position with the FTA for five years and worked as a Metro Transit Police officer for 28 years before that. The new chief will have his work cut out for him: Metro saw an 18 percent increase in robberies in 2007. Taborn will reportedly be paid $160,000, and begins work on March 10.
Talking Trash: A D.C. Council oversight hearing today will allow residents to air their complaints about problems with trash collection and pick-up in the city. The Post chronicles some of the worst stories of problem trash areas over the last year, which appear to be especially bad in Ward 5. What’s been your experience with trash lately?
