MUSIC: Combining elements of shoegaze, psychedelic pop and electro, local duo Screen Vinyl Image (featuring former members of Alcian Blue) is sure to please fans of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500 and A Sunny Day in Glasgow when they stop by the Velvet Lounge at 8 p.m. With local sunshine pop rockers Julie Ocean and The Sky Drops.

MUSIC: Detroit’s Dwele is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer. He recently earned a Grammy nomination for his work on an Earth, Wind, and Fire tribute album and sang the hook on Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights.” With more attention on him than ever before, he’s prepping the release of his third studio album and will be playing at the Birchmere. 7 p.m., $35.

JAZZ: Guitar genius Stanley Jordan brings his unique technique and style to Blues Alley on Thursday for the start of a 4-night stand of solo performance. Tickets to the 8 and 10 p.m. sets are $24 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

MOVIE: The D.C. Independent Film Festival holds its opening night ceremony tonight with a screening of Alex Cox’s Searchers 2.0, a satirical look at the lives of two aging actors who have spent their lives playing bit parts in Westerns. At George Washington University’s Jack Morton Auditorium. Tickets to the opening night party plus the film are $25, or snag film-only tickets for $10. Cox will be on hand to open the festival, with festivities beginning at 7 p.m.

MUSIC: Cadence Weapon is anything but your typical hip-hop act. With IDM-influenced production and a wordy flow worthy of the reviews he’s written for the likes of Stylus and Pitchfork, Weapon is as likely to have you scratching your head as moving your feet. With fellow Canucks Born Ruffians at DC9, $10, 9 p.m.

READING: Anne Lamott, author of the bestsellers Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, will discuss her latest memoir on how she found religion, Grace (Eventually): Thoughts On Faith. At the Penn Quarter Olsson’s. 7 p.m.
