It’s time once again for the D.C. Idiotarod, that time honored race of costumed drunken loons pulling shopping carts through the streets of D.C. This year’s race is happening tomorrow, Saturday, March 8, at 2:30 p.m. If you haven’t formed a team yet, it’s technically too late, but you might just still have time to convince a group of your friends to dress up like superheroes, characters from a 1980s TV show, or professional wrestlers, and get together tomorrow to run from bar to bar with a cart in the name of charity.
Pre-registration is closed at this point, but teams that have already completed their forms can check-in at the Front Page in Dupont Circle between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All pre-registered teams must complete registration by 1:30 p.m., and if they don’t, folks on the waiting list will be allowed to compete. Email idiotarod (at) gmail.com to find out more information about getting on the waiting list. The official rules are over here.
For the rest of us, the fun is in grabbing a spot somewhere on the race course to watch the teams roll by. There are two courses this year, a Racer course and a Leisure course, and though the courses haven’t yet been revealed, they’ve ended up on 18th Street in Adams Morgan in the past. This year’s finish line, however, is near Union Station, with an after-party planned at My Brother’s Place and Hamiltons. So to guarantee you catch plenty of Idiotarod action, consider either the Dupont starting line or the finish line at the 200 Block of 2nd Street NW.
