READING: Michael Farquhar, a writer and editor at the Washington Post, will be at the Penn Quarter Olsson’s to talk about his whimsical new book, A Treasury of Foolishly Forgotten Americans: Pirates, Skinflints, Patriots, and Other Colorful Characters Stuck in the Footnotes of History. 7 p.m.
MOVIE: The work of Japanese filmmaker Shinobu Yaguchi (Waterboys) gets the red carpet treatment tonight at the Japanese Information and Cultural Center, with a free screening of his 2004 comedy, Swing Girls, at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature a live performance by members of the Tateshina High School Band, the inspiration behind Yaguchi’s film, which tells the story of a group of bratty high school girls who, in an attempt to avoid going to summer school, end up having to replace the school band. Hilarity, naturally, ensues.
JAZZ: The Kennedy Center‘s Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program starts tonight, featuring outstanding emerging jazz artists. Also tomorrow and Friday at the Millennium Stage The performances are at 6 p.m. Free.
