Leading the recommendations this week are the free concerts, which also happen to be the best events on the calendar. If you insist on paying money for your music this week, read through to the end.
FREE, FREE, FREE:
>> One of the best historically informed performance ensembles in the world, Europa Galante (pictured), will give a concert with their leader, violinist Fabio Biondi, on Wednesday (April 16, 8 p.m.) at the Library of Congress. It is now impossible to find a ticket, but a few seats may be made available the night of the concert: show up early.
>> An alternative for Wednesday evening (April 16, 7:30 p.m.) is the final Musicians from Marlboro concert at the Freer Gallery of Art. Six musicians from the Marlboro Festival, including violist Kim Kashkashian, will perform music by Britten, Mozart, and Dvořák. Reserve a seat through Ticketmaster or show up one hour before the concert when tickets are distributed.
>> The early music week at the Library of Congress continues on Thursday (April 17, 8 p.m.) with a free recital by violinist John Holloway, cellist Jaap ter Linden, and harpsichordist Lars Ulrik Mortensen. The program is a survey of Baroque masters including Veracini, Vivaldi, Leclair, Corelli, Couperin, and others.
>> On Friday (April 18, 8 p.m.) the Pavel Haas Quartet will also play a free concert at the Library of Congress, including music by Dvořák, Smetana, and the group’s namesake.
