MUSIC: The New Pornographers/Okkervil River shows for the next two nights at the 9:30 Club are both sold out (though Craigslist has some options), but if you still can’t go, you can comfort yourself with two facts: 1) It looks like Neko Case is in fact not playing with the band UPDATE: We can’t really tell whether Neko Case is playing the band’s D.C. dates or not. She was supposed to be on this tour, but missed at least one date in Ottawa. You never really know with her and this band, but we now hear she may actually be at the 9:30 Club. We’ll know for sure tonight! 2) the Velvet Lounge has scheduled some intriguing counterprogramming down the street, bringing in the big, jangly garage sound of Alabama’s buzzworthy Thomas Function. 10 p.m., $7.

READING: NPR senior news analyst and ABC commentator Cokie Roberts will be at Politics and Prose to talk about the companion volume to her 2004 book Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation, Ladies of Liberty. 7 p.m., free.
JAZZ: See the musicians of tomorrow perform tonight at Blues Alley as the George Mason University Jazz Ensemble takes the stage for 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets are $18 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
