Sure, with Folger Theater, two Shakespeare Theaters, and Washington Shakespeare Company all alive and kicking in D.C. (not to mention Synetic’s silent Shakespeare productions), it’s not exactly hard to get your Bard fix in this city. But what do all those companies have in common? You have to pay for them.
That’s what’s so awesome about the Shakespeare Free For All at Carter Barron Amphitheatre, which begins tonight and ends June 1: you don’t have to shell out for tickets, and you get to see a slick production of Hamlet in a scenic outdoor setting. Jeffrey Carlson’s pouty and petulant riff on the character wasn’t our favorite performance this season, but the show is certainly worth seeing, and that was even back when you did have to pay for tickets. The actors playing Hamlet and Ophelia are the same, but this production boasts some new faces, including the great Patrick Page as Claudius.
We’ve written before about how the Free For All process can involve some hassle, so plan accordingly and get in line for your tickets at one of these three locations early. And if for some reason you’re Hamlet-ed out, Olney Theater’s doing Two Gentlemen of Verona, also for free, beginning June 19.
