Welcome back to work, Washington. As you gingerly settle down in your desk chair, careful not to disturb that painful sunburn you picked up over the holiday weekend, you may be interested to hear that the FDA is considering adding new rules to sunscreen labeling. The rules would provide more accurate information for consumers on whether a product blocks both UVB and UVA rays, and force manufacturers to drop such baloney marketing terms as “waterproof” and “sweatproof” — since it’s physically impossible for any liquid sunscreen to be either. So go ahead, blame your sunburn on misleading labeling, instead of the fact that you probably forgot to reapply when you should have.
Virginia Set to Execute Man: The state of Virginia is set to execute convicted murderer Kevin Green today. If the execution goes forward as planned, it would be the first one in the state since 2006. Green’s attorneys and other activists have argued that Green is mentally retarded and therefore should not be executed. Va. Gov. Tim Kaine, who has said he is against the death penalty but has promised to uphold the law, previously intervened to halt the execution of another death row prisoner thought to be mentally retarded.
GW Parkway Closed After Body Found: The body of a motorcyclist discovered this morning near the riverbank along a portion of the George Washington Parkway has caused investigators to shut down parts of the road. A search for the dead man began yesterday evening after Arlington police got a call that a motorcyclist had swerved and driven off a cliff on the parkway. Northbound lanes of the parkway will remain closed as the investigation continues, though southbound lanes were reopened overnight. Officials are encouraging drivers to avoid the area around the Spout Run Parkway.
