Via Boxing Along the Beltway, we have learned that another D.C. athlete has become a blogger. Boxer Tony “The Tiger” Thompson has started blogging in preparation for his July 12 fight with Wladimir Klitschko for the IBO, IBF, and WBO Heavyweight Championship Belts. Well, kinda. It looks like he is sending out letters to some boxing outlets. They are blog posts, but he doesn’t have them on a blog of his own, or at least one that I can find. Here is his first entry. In it, he travels to Germany and Ukraine to promote the fight, and contemplates telling Klitschko, “I must break you.”
Thompson won the right to fight Klitschko about a year ago in a WBO Heavyweight Title Eliminator fight against Luan Krasniqi. Thompson was originally supposed to fight the winner of the fight between Sultan Ibragimov and Ruslan Chagaev, but this being boxing, Ibragimov decided to fight Evander Holyfield and Klitschko instead. Ibragimov lost to Klitschko, and Wlad decided to honor Tony’s right to a title shot.
In his second post, Thompson speculates that Klitschko is responsible for his surprise prostate exam, and discusses his promotional shoot with a live tiger. To show how important this fight is to him, when he leaves to train in Florida he writes:
“I left the wife and 7 kids back at home with the broken air conditioner, broken dishwasher, broken dryer and the electricity down in one half of the house. To me, this is God’s sign that I better get this fight done. I have to get this fight done. But I am OK with leaving to train because I know my wife and kids are going to be OK. They know daddy is doing what he has to do to get this stuff fixed.”
After Klitschko’s lackluster win against Ibragimov, many are expecting Wlad to come out strong and try to silence his critics with a decisive victory. Most people are predicting an easy win for Klitschko, but there is at least one writer who sees a way for Tony to win. The fight will air on HBO on July 12 at 4:30 p.m. ET, and re-air later that night at 10 p.m. ET.
