Good morning, D.C. It was a busy holiday weekend for the Metropolitan Police Department by any measure. In addition to the typically high number of 911 calls made by residents mistaking fireworks for gunshots the night of July 4, there were also plenty of actual gunshots that night, with three separate shootings killing two people and injuring four others. Two of the shootings occurred in Southeast, while the other happened at 13th and Clifton in Northwest. Turns out not very many people went out of town for the weekend, so maybe that contributed to the high number of casualties. Other weekend deaths include a man found dead inside a trash bin and a man found dead from gunshot wounds last night.

We Want FiOS! We Want FiOS!: The Examiner’s been following the action between the District’s consumer advocate and Verizon over why the city doesn’t appear to be getting FiOS anytime soon, even though nearby suburbs have had it for a while. The latest is that People’s Counsel Elizabeth Noël has threatened the company with backing out of a rate settlement it reached with the city in March if it cannot show it is actively working on FiOS for the District.
