READING: Have you caught Olympic fever yet? David Maraniss will be at Politics and Prose to talk about the games, specifically the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, which is not coincidentally what his book Rome 1960 is about. 7 p.m.
JAZZ: Legendary bluesman David “Honeyboy” Edwards pays a visit to Blues Alley to perform 8 and 10 p.m. sets. His latest album, Last of the Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen: Live in Dallas! won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Recording. Tickets are $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge. MOVIE: The AFI Silver is hosting a new series of films related to science and the National Institute of Health. It kicks off tonight with Away From Her, last year’s heartbreaking film about Alzheimer’s directed by Sarah Polly and starring Julie Christie. The free showing will also be accompanied by Alzheimer’s expert Neil Buckholtz. 7 p.m.
MUSIC: Once known as YahZarah, native Washingtonian Purple St. James has built a strong career on the indie soul circuit by taking the stage with the likes of Erykah Badu and Foreign Exchange on top of her solo work. Bohemian Caverns‘ “Rhythm & Soul” series will play host to her for two shows. $15 in advance/$20 at the door, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
