Editor’s Note: An editorial mishap led to this week’s music agenda being thrown together haphazardly this afternoon. Please add suggestions for things we missed in the comments.
TUESDAY:
>> Detroit-based ensemble Nomo (pictured) are at the Rock and Roll Hotel today, playing instrumental jazzy, funky, Africany music. They’re touring behind their new album Ghost Rock which got praise from the hometown Detroit Free Press and BBC Radio. Openers are Funk Ark and Deep Sang with DJ Meistro. 8 p.m., $12.
>> Australian touring band City Riots hit the Black Cat backstage, with support from Three stars alums The City Veins and New York’s The Dig. $8, 9 p.m.
WEDNESDAY:
>> If you’re looking to feel like you’re on a tropical island rather than tropical D.C., try the Historical Society of Washington‘s Music on the Green, where the Pan Masters Steel Orchestra plays a free show on the HSW’s lawn at Mount Vernon Square. The band, from the D.C. area, has been together for 25 years and was named the best steel band at D.C.’s Caribbean Carnival 12 times in 15 years. And it’s free. 6:30 p.m.
>> DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist present “The Hard Sell” at the 9:30 Club.
THURSDAY:
>> Three Stars alum and one of our favorite local acoustic performers, Justin Trawick, will be at Jammin Java tonight with New Jersey singer-songwriterJenny Owen Youngs. $12, 7:30 p.m.
FRIDAY:
>> The ever expanding Hoots & Hellmouth lineup provides more backwoods dirt road soul than you’d expect from from a band based out of Philadelphia. They’ll be taking their guitars, fiddles, harmonies and kitchen sink to Jammin Java along with jazzy Tennessee singer guitarist Robinella. 7 p.m. $12.
>> Three Stars alums Carol Bui and The Caribbean are strong draws on their own, but put together with Poor But Sexy, whose tagline of “like Steely Dan fronted by R. Kelly” just doesn’t get old. At least one of the acts claim that by missing this lineup at the Velvet Lounge “you’ll hate yourself for a long long time.” We’re inclined to agree. 10pm. $8.
SATURDAY:
>> Local rockers Collider, described by the band as AC/DC with PJ Harvey on vocals, will be at the Rock and Roll Hotel with The Engine Room, Memories from the Space Age and Suspicious Package. Let’s hope Suspicious Package doesn’t ruin the show by shutting down the club. They’re always doing that with the Metro stations. 9:30 p.m. $10.
>> Funk legend George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will land their Mothership at the the 9:30 Club for one night in Chocolate City. $40, 8 p.m.
>> Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Bellman Barker and Ha Ha Tonka are at the Black Cat. $12, 9 p.m.
SUNDAY:
>> The ’80s synthpop duo from the U.K formed by former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet, Yazoo (known as Yaz in the U.S.), are back in the U.S. for “Yazoo Reconnected: Live” They’ll be stopping by the 9:30 tonight touring off the release of their new digitally remstared box set, In Your Room. $50, 7 p.m.
